The Al Shami Kitchen is a project that aims to provide Syrian refugees residing in Turkey with an opportunity to socially and culturally integrate into Turkish society and develop economic self-sufficiency. This project seeks to make a positive impact on the lives of Syrian refugees through the infrastructure that the Kitchen is planning to establish.
Al Shami Kitchen uses food as a means to encourage and support the refugee women. Cooking is often described as therapeutic and this is certainly true in Al Shami Kitchen. Syrian women cook the food of their homeland, and this is then sold to raise additional funds for the project. Throughout the past year since we launched this project in Izmit, we have, with the support of Izmit Municipality, offered the women Turkish lessons and run private tutoring sessions for their children in order to prepare them for entry into the school system. We aim to work with chefs and colleges to improve our women’s skills to a level at which they can gain professional catering qualifications. We are applying for EU funding to build a new kitchen facility so that we can bring more refugees into the project.
